My take on "the conference"

As you all know, the World Tamil Classical Language Conference (WTCLC) is currently going on in Coimbatore and every Tamilian is expected to follow this on TV. Yes, on Kalaignar TV. Having written on similar lines before, I’m forced to return to this subject because I’ve heard so many opinions that I’m compelled to offer my own. First I will try to clarify some issues that I think a lot of people have trouble understanding. Then we shall go onto the facts and some deeper stuff.

Firstly, a common misconception is that the conference is aimed at making people realize the glory of the Tamil language, which is apparently, one of only six languages in the world to be declared ‘classical’. This is what the conference is designed to make you think. If that was the purpose, the conference would have been held under the auspices of a university, with the attendees all being people who hold degrees or are otherwise qualified linguists capable of conducting research into the language. Second, many people tell me this is no different from foreign embassies spreading their languages in all other nations. This is again a misconception, no foreign embassy directly involves itself in even conducting foreign language classes, it is done by organizations devoted to the language like Alliance Française (French) and ABK Aots Dosokai (Japanese). The International Association for Tamil Research has apparently refused to recognize the WTCLC, saying it is a political stunt. I would also ask you to think about the abnormal number of members of Mr. Karunanidhi’s family presenting their so-called works at the conference. Apart from the TN chief minister himself, two of his granddaughters have presented poems at the conference. With Pratibha Patil and Surjit Singh Barnala presiding, it seems almost funny when people try to tell me there is no politics involved. Out of the eight poets who presented, seven dedicated their verses to Kalaignar, no there is no politics involved. The eighth apparently praised a guy who set himself on fire during the Sri Lankan offensive against the LTTE demanding ceasefire.

Having set the facts before you, I shall go on to my opinions. Our government has spent 380 Crore rupees on this conference. This amount has led to huge protestations among the more sensible citizens of Tamil Nadu. I, however think that the amount hardly matters. What matters is that the government has spent money on something it has no business spending. Languages are just arrangements of strokes (written) and sound (spoken). To say that one such arrangement is superior to another is pure nonsense. There have been practical difficulties in many languages and these have been corrected over the ages by borrowing and integrating other languages. Hence, this Tamil superiority is just a political tool invented by people like Anna who spotted an opportunity to create a unique vote bank. There are people, even among the highly educated who talk about superiority of languages and that is just sad. This is again a result of the foolish division of states on a linguistic basis. We have given unscrupulous politicians a chance to arouse dangerous regional passions, which they have taken with both hands. I have already tried to suggest a solution to this problem in my earlier post (read it here). The problem is especially acute in Tamil Nadu. This is apparent in the undue support LTTE receives from Tamilians all over the world. To me the LTTE is just another terrorist organization which deserves no sympathy from any of us. It is in fact, beneficial to us that the Sri Lankan army quelled the uprising and killed its main leaders as this will stop the refugee problem in Tamil Nadu. This is equivalent to Urdu-speakers supporting the Pakistan-based terrorists because of their common language. Yes, that’s how ridiculous it really is.

To conclude, I’d like to congratulate our Kalaignar (artist) on a grand success in his real Kalai (art), swindling.

  2. Imagine me, just 4 km away from the point of conference not even a bit aroused by this conf! Its a political move. Rightly pointed out, pm and presi have no job in a 'tamil conf'. Its like inviting pele to inaugurate ipl (of course, ipl is dumb enough to consider that..)! Tamil people aren't given the respect they thought they'd get in the conf. They still throng the streets, travel (hanging) outside the bus. I saw a tamil scholar in a restaurant, dressed in simple simplest simple clothes, accompanied by no one. And i saw some random malaysian guy given convoy protection of 5 police cars before and behind him, and an hour long traffic jam in his honour...for him to drive 8km. This conf is absolute crap! On my train to madras, my coach was filled with drunk idiots... What were they celebrating? The language? Which part of the language is so classical to say 'drink to the brim and travel'.

  3. I think LTTE was a terrorist organization too. But that does not justify the genocide Srilankan government has carried out. And division of states on linguistic basis happened because people fought for it. It was a very powerful issue at the time. You have to understand that India is more of a federation of several nations. People share a lot in common but still hold their language, religion or caste important. It is wrong to change that by force and if done will lead to grave results. Regarding WCTC I agree that the government has no business conducting it. As you said a proper Tamil conference would be the one conducted by a private body or trust devoted to the cause of spreading Tamil.

  4. If we had focussed on the commonalities and looked at our differences for the frivolities they really are, we wouldn't have come to this state. The problem is regional parties start estranging people from the nation of India, I somehow feel this is just a step away from secession.

  5. dei i totally agree dat this conference is bullshit..... if ppl like kalam and cho are not invited and khushboo(wat does she know abt tamil) takes a seat in the first row it means tamil is the last item(if it is on the agenda in d first place) on the agenda... it is an utter waste of public money and i hope the senseless masses who vote for free Tv s wake up atleast now!!!!

As for the linguistic division i feel there is no other practical solution... hw do u decentralize the administration then??? rajaji s ideas of 4 states or so is impractical da.... imagine this situation... with hardly 20% ppl educated hw can a guy speaking kannada campaign in rural TN.... look at conferences of Cong in chennai where sonia gandhi and manmohan attend... it is a farce with them speaking in Hindi and crowd hardly understanding anything :D
probably the move to oppose hindi as third lang was wrong but the move to oppose hindi as the sole official lang definitely wasnt....

  6. Fair enough, no solution then, but just do me a favor and wiki up causes for the civil war in united states and you'll see my point. There are probably worse sectional divisions at work here. I feel the best way to befriend two bickering bulls is to tie them to the same cart. Make them dependent on each other and there is no way they will oppose the union. Also, please look at my 3rd post where i talk about the servant maid in my house, to her hyderabad, AP is no different from pakistan. This is because we identify only with ourselves and focus on the differences b/w us and other states. Think about it.

  7. @harsha....totally accept the fact dat MK is using dis WTC as a platform to make him a saviour of TAMILS and to leave a legacy dat finds a permanent place in d tamil history.....

but i felt dat it ws irrelevant to bring the LTTE issue cus dat s a different scenario all together...and d word terrorist is so illusive nowadays...d british called d american states (ppl lyk george washington ) that claimed independence a terrorist, netaji ws called terrorist by d british and i wud like to point out dat even Nelson Mandela led an armed wing of the ANC and he ws considered a terrorist and even now mandela needs to get spl permission to enter USA as he is on US watch list http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-04-30-watchlist_N.htm
ironically mandela s a nobel peace prize winner and d whole world ws anxious to see Mandela attend the FIFA WC opening ceremony(once branded as terrorist).

sorry for deviating frm d actual issue...watever it may b...der s no justification for dis WTC rather it cud hav been named as "glorifying MK"

btw nice writing...luvd reading all ur blog posts :)
